Director Julian Schnabel’s new movie “Miral” has made waves at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and is scheduled for release stateside in 2011. It’s based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Rula Jebreal (who also wrote the screenplay), and portrays the lives of Palestinians during the events of 1947-48 through the First Intifada in 1987.
From what I’m hearing, it’s getting fairly so-so reviews, but it’s still pretty unprecedented for a major film feature to focus on this subject matter. Click here for an interview with Schnabel (whose previous films include one of my all-time favorites, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”)
How awesome will this film be! Shame it will not make it to Australia until March 2011. Good on Frieda Pinto for putting herself out there. Certainly, she will be blacklisted for those by some because she is humanising the other. Well done to Julian Schnabel. Thank you for making this happen!! At last a semi-mainstream movie that will challenge traditional stereotypes about Palestinians and Palestine.
